PRAYER FOR YOUTH
We offer to you, Loving God, the gifts and needs of youth. Bless them with your guiding grace as they face the challenges and opportunities in their lives. Touch their hearts with the gentleness of your love, that they may know they are valued and valuable beings. Send your spirit of hope to their lives, that they may believe in themselves and know they are needed in this world. Grace them with the gift of joy that they may celebrate life through laughter and tears alike. Guide us, as we continue to grow in appreciation of the many gifts of young people, in the ministry opportunities we offer to them, in the journey of faith we walk with them, in our shared mission as a community called to discipleship in the world. Help us know how to support our youth, especially our middle school and high school students, as we all work together to support them and love them.
We ask this in Jesus' name. Amen.

Saint of the Day: Maria Goretti

One of the largest crowds ever assembled for a canonization—250,000—symbolized the reaction of millions touched by the simple story of Maria Goretti. She was the daughter of a poor Italian tenant farmer, had no chance to go to school, never learned to read or write. When Maria made her First Communion not long before her death, she was one of the larger and somewhat backward members of the class.

On a hot afternoon in July, Maria was sitting at the top of the stairs of her house, mending a shirt. She was not quite 12 years old, but physically mature. A cart stopped outside, and a neighbor, 18-year-old Alessandro, ran up the stairs. He seized her and pulled her into a bedroom. She struggled and tried to call for help. “No, God does not wish it,” she cried out. “It is a sin. You would go to hell for it.” Alessandro began striking at her blindly with a long dagger.

Maria was taken to a hospital. Her last hours were marked by the usual simple compassion of the good—concern about where her mother would sleep, forgiveness of her murderer (she had been in fear of him, but did not say anything lest she cause trouble to his family), and her devout welcoming of Viaticum, her last Holy Communion. She died about 24 hours after the attack.

Alessandro was sentenced to 30 years in prison. For a long time he was unrepentant and surly. One night he had a dream or vision of Maria gathering flowers and offering them to him. His life changed. When he was released after 27 years, his first act was to beg the forgiveness of Maria’s mother.

Devotion to the young martyr grew, miracles were worked, and in less than half a century she was canonized. At her beatification in 1947, her 82-year-old mother, two sisters, and her brother appeared with Pope Pius XII on the balcony of St. Peter’s. Three years later, at Maria’s canonization, a 66-year-old Alessandro Serenelli knelt among the quarter-million people and cried tears of joy.

El Santo del Dia: Maria Goretti

Una de las multitudes más grandes jamás reunidas para una canonización (250.000) simbolizó la reacción de millones de personas conmovidas por la sencilla historia de María Goretti. Era hija de un pobre arrendatario italiano, no tuvo oportunidad de ir a la escuela, nunca aprendió a leer ni a escribir. Cuando María hizo su Primera Comunión poco antes de su muerte, era una de las integrantes más grandes y algo atrasadas de la clase.

En una calurosa tarde de julio, María estaba sentada en lo alto de las escaleras de su casa, remendando una camisa. No tenía ni 12 años, pero era físicamente madura. Un carrito se detuvo afuera y un vecino, Alessandro, de 18 años, subió corriendo las escaleras. La agarró y la llevó a un dormitorio. Luchó y trató de pedir ayuda. “No, Dios no lo quiere”, gritó. "Es un pecado. Irías al infierno por ello. Alessandro comenzó a golpearla a ciegas con una larga daga.

María fue llevada a un hospital. Sus últimas horas estuvieron marcadas por la simple y habitual compasión de los buenos: preocupación por dónde dormiría su madre, perdón por su asesino (le había tenido miedo, pero no dijo nada para no causarle problemas a su familia) y su devota bienvenida al Viático, su última Comunión. Murió unas 24 horas después del ataque.

Alessandro fue condenado a 30 años de prisión. Durante mucho tiempo fue impenitente y hosco. Una noche tuvo un sueño o visión de María recogiendo flores y ofreciéndoselas. Su vida cambió. Cuando fue liberado después de 27 años, su primer acto fue pedir perdón a la madre de María.

Creció la devoción a la joven mártir, se obraron milagros y en menos de medio siglo fue canonizada. En su beatificación en 1947, su madre de 82 años, dos hermanas y su hermano aparecieron con el Papa Pío XII en el balcón de San Pedro. Tres años más tarde, en la canonización de María, Alessandro Serenelli, de 66 años, se arrodilló entre el cuarto de millón de personas y lloró lágrimas de alegría.
